September 14

Join us on September 14 for Our Next Luncheon Featuring Marc Carmichael at GWU’s Marvin Center, Room 403.

It's time to kick off the NCGPC's 2011-2012 program year, and we hope you can join us for our first luncheon. If you've been lucky enough to hear Marc Carmichael of R&R Newkirk, you already know that he's a great and informative speaker. Please join us for two engaging sessions with Marc.

10:45-11:45 am., Nuts & Bolts: State and Federal Death Taxes Primer with our Speaker Marc Carmichael, JD, President of R&R Newkirk

Charitable gift planners don't need to be accountants or tax attorneys to be effective, but they do need to know the basics of state and federal transfer taxes and be conversant with estate planning strategies that may include charitable giving--especially the estate tax charitable deduction. Although it's true that less than 1% of Americans have estates large enough to owe federal estate taxes, these donors can be found in the databases of most charities. Tax savings can result in significant bequests from these folks to your organization. Additionally, 22 states and the District of Columbia impose inheritance or estate taxes, which can be reduced through charitable giving.

12:30-1:30 pm., Luncheon Presentation: Marketing Charitable Bequests Under the New Rules

Bequests are said to account for 80-90% of all planned gifts, and may take on even greater importance if incentives for lifetime giving are reduced by Congress as part of deficit reduction. What bequest marketing approaches are available, now that federal estate taxes affect only a relative handful of Americans? Are state death taxes a factor in planning charitable bequests? What nontax strategies remain for charitable estate planning? Where should we be spending our scarce marketing dollars? Direct mail? Internet? Seminars? Telephone solicitations? How do we get donors to make or change estate plans, and include our organizations?

Are you confused by the various and ever-changing state requirements for charities that issue gift annuities? Are you intrigued by the potential offered by gifts of real estate but alarmed by stories about charities that have been “burned” by such gifts? Then join us on December 14, as Noland Mackenzie “Mac” Canter, a founding partner of Copilevitz & Canter, LLC, discusses both of these important topics for gift planners.

This session will review the various requirements for state registration among charities that offer charitable gift annuities to their donors, including reserve requirements and state- and federally-mandated disclosures.

12:30-1:30 pm., Luncheon Presentation - “Tapping the Unrealized Potential of Gifts of Real Estate with Mac Canter, Founding Partner, Copilevitz & Canter LLC

Real estate is the greatest source of family wealth in the US. Yet many development officers don’t pursue gifts of real estate because of concerns about risk associated with real estate and because real estate gifts can be complex. This presentation will focus on understanding risks and using techniques that minimize or eliminate risks. Mr. Canter will discuss special planned giving formats for real estate gifts, including bargain sales, charitable remainder trusts, and charitable gift annuities. He will also address the federal tax on unrelated debt-financed income and the “step transaction” doctrine as it may apply to real estate gifts.
