10:45-11:45 am Nuts & Bolts Speaker: "60 Minutes on Charitable Remainder Trusts" with Joe Bull, Senior Philanthropy Officer for Global Priorities The Nature Conservancy

The charitable remainder trust is both the most flexible and most complex of all charitable gift planning instruments. This session will provide an overview of the issues specific to CRT’s, including general trust basics, CRT mechanics, CRAT’s vs. CRUT’s, income tax issues, the components of the income tax charitable deduction and how each affects the deduction, Federal gift and estate tax issues, managing and administering CRT’s, clues to look for, etc. While not the last word, this session will provide a good working introductory knowledge that all gift planners should have.

12:30pm-1:30 pm Luncheon Speaker: "What’s Wrong With This Gift?" with Joe Bull, Senior Philanthropy Officer for Global Priorities The Nature Conservancy

The old saying, “Truth is stranger than fiction,” certainly applies to charitable gift planning. This session will examine several real life scenarios, and participants will be asked to determine what is wrong and what the gift planner should have (or should not have) done. If you like interactive sessions, this one is definitely for you.

10:45-11:45 am Nuts & Bolts: "Designing a Basic Marketing Plan for Your Planned Giving Efforts" with Rob Blizard, Director of Gift Planning at George Washington's Mount Vernon

Rob BlizzardSo, your boss asks you to take the reins for next year’s budget and design a marketing plan for your organization’s planned giving programs. Yikes! Where do you start? What do you include? How can you design your budget for maximum effectiveness? This nuts-and-bolts session will discuss some of the basics of putting together a plan for spending your money wisely with a focus on making your plan successful, user-friendly, and responsive to upper management. Rob Blizard, Director of Gift Planning at George Washington’s Mount Vernon, will lead an interactive session during which the group together will design a rudimentary plan.

12:30-1:30 pm Luncheon: "The Millionaire Donor Next Door" with Steve Mohyla Jr., CFP, Bridgeland Wealth

Tom Stanley shared the surprising traits of the Millionaires who live next door: what they thought, how they bought, and what they cared about. His book is a way to get into their heads, so to speak.

Steve Mohyla will share studies showing what your potential donor is thinking, buying, and more importantly, worrying about. The Millionaire Donor Next Door will explore these and other issues with some thought provoking questions for you to ask yourself as you prepare to sit down with the Donor. Being able to put yourself in their place can help you better see what charitable plans will fit into their lives.

Viken MikaelianIn this presentation, Viken examines successful tactics that for-profits use to increase sales, what non-profits can learn from them, and how to avoid mistakes that alienate prospects and squander limited budget resources. Through concrete examples of good and bad marketing pieces, he emphasizes the important role the Internet plays in planned giving marketing and suggests additional alternative marketing options. He also explores how the new generation of donors differs from traditional prospects. Attendees will learn how to select the best planned giving prospects and reach them in ways they never thought possible.

About the Nuts & Bolts Speaker:
Richard Barrett is president of Barrett Planned Giving, Inc., a consulting firm that provides marketing, coaching and telephone donor consulting services to a wide range of nonprofit organizations. Former Director of Gift Planning for Georgetown University, he combines the experience of establishing that university's successful planned giving program with three decades of banking and nonprofit board membership. He is co-author of Planned Giving Essentials: A Step-by-Step Guide to Success, Second Edition, Aspen Publishers, Inc., 2002, and is a frequent conference speaker on planned giving topics.

12:30pm-1:30 pm Luncheon Speaker: Planning in Uncertain Times with Fredrick J. Tansill, JD, LLM

Fredrick J. Tansill, JD, LLMThis presentation will discuss financial and estate planning in uncertain times; ideas to preserve wealth, instill family values, and achieve charitable objectives; charitable remainder trusts, lead trusts, private foundations and donor advised funds; charitable giving income tax limits; the future of the estate and gift tax; and the future of income tax rates.

About the Luncheon Speaker:
Fred Tansill's practice focuses on tax-oriented estate planning, particularly for professionals, corporate executives, entrepreneurs and owners of closely-held businesses, as well as probate, trust and estate disputes and counsel to bank trust departments and other fiduciaries. He is frequently involved in business counsel and tax planning for individuals, corporations and not-for-profit organizations. He represents clients before the Internal Revenue Service in regard to audit and compliance issues. His practice includes estate planning and probate for residents of Virginia, Washington, D.C. and Maryland.

For eleven years Fred practiced as a partner in McGuire, Woods, Battle & Boothe, Virginia's largest law firm, and as a shareholder in Verner, Liipfert, Bernhard, McPherson & Hand ("Bob Dole's Firm"), one of Washington's largest law firms. In November 1997 Fred started his own firm in Tysons Corner/McLean. He is frequently called upon to speak to Bar and industry groups on estate, tax, asset protection, international trust, charitable giving and closely-held business matters and on legal ethics.

Session I: Douglas White on The Art of Planned Giving

Doug White is a national leader in the philanthropic community. Since 1979 he has worked with charities of all types and sizes on planned and major giving, as well as on the many issues related to organizational development. Doug is also an adjunct assistant professor of philanthropy and fundraising at New York University, where he teaches ethics-based philanthropy. Throughout his career, he has worked with organizations such as the Smithsonian Institution, the United States Holocaust Memorial Museum, Jewish Recovery Houses, and the Wilderness Society. He is the author of Charity on Trial, published in 2007, and The Art of Planned Giving: Understanding Donors and the Culture of Giving.

Session II: In Their Own Words: Donor Panel

If you want to understand your donor’s needs and desires, come hear from donors in area organizations about why they give and what matters most to them when considering major planned gifts.
