Nuts & Bolts - "Counting Gifts in Campaigns: A New Paradigm for Non-Profits" with Dr. Bruce Bigelow, founding partner of Charitable Development Consulting

In the fall of 2003, NCPG created a new task force designed to produce a set of defensible and logical guidelines for counting and reporting planned gifts, particularly in a campaign context. Even more broadly, this project has come to focus on the broad range of reports charitable organizations make to their external constituencies. This presentation will set forth the key findings of the task force's report, suggest a new paradigm for organizaing and reporting gifts, and provide a forum for comments and questions about these suggested guidelines. While this presentation is not technical, it addresses an issue that affects all fundraisers.

Luncheon - "The Real World: Keeping Your CFO Out of Trouble (and Vice Versa) with Angie Sosdian and Kevin Schuyler from The Nature Conservancy

Finance and fundraising often have different perspectives on the same issue, but it's important for these two functions to work closely together. To achieve a successful organizational gift planning program, fundraisers must understand the importance of compliance, risk management, investment of assets, and revenue forecasting. In turn, a Chief Financial Officer must understand the cash flow implication of deferred gifts, the importance of flexibility in working with donors and prospects - including recognition, accepting unusual assets, and structuring appropriate gifts - and the long-term benefits of donor stewardship. This presentation will share insights on the planned giving/finance relationship and offer practical tips for an effective collaboration.
